INFORMATION FOR NEW RESIDENTS TO
CARTWRIGHT AND THE RM OF ROBLIN
Listed below are some items that may be of use to you as a new resident to Canada.
Social Insurance number – This number is allocated to every individual and identifies you to the Government of Canada. You will need this number in order to work. You will need personal identification documentation (passport) and authorization to live and work in Canada (work visa, permanent residence status). Identification and authorization documents should be shown as authentic at a Service Canada center or mail in of originals are required. Mail-in application forms are available from the Municipal Office. A Service Canada representative is available at Killarney Library every two weeks.
Health registration number – This number is allocated to a family and you will need a social number in order to apply. Mail-in application forms are available from the Municipal Office.
School – application forms are available at Reception at Cartwright school. Tours can be arranged through the school Principal or Economic Development Officer.
Water connection – if your home is serviced by the municipal supply from the Village of Cartwright, you should make a request to the Municipal Office for water to be connected. There is a $15 connection fee.
Electricity/hydro – A request should be made to Manitoba Hydro to allow service to your home. You will be asked for your mailing address, physical address of the property, telephone number (if known), employer (if known) and date of required service. You may be asked to read the electric meter at the start of your service.
Telephone service – MTS is the service provider and there is a $12 connection fee. You will be asked for two pieces of identification (passport, driving license, etc); if your home is rented, the name of your landlord; if you own the property, the legal description or street address; a mailing address for billing purposes and a contact name and telephone number. If your home has previously had MTS connected, service for your use usually can commence within 48 hours but if not arrangements for installation can take up to 14 days.
Post office, mailing address – application for allocation of a box number should be made to the Postmistress at the Post Office on Broadway. Initially there may not be a box available for your use and you should notify people your mailing address is General Delivery, Cartwright, MB, ROK OLO. The Postmistress will inform you when a box is available for your use.
Accountant – year end tax return – personal tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December. All people who have earned money are requested to submit a return to Revenue Canada (please see following information on tax returns).
Bank or Credit Union – in order to open a bank account you will need two forms of identification and a social insurance number (please see following information from Credit Union).
Driving licence, Blue Cross coverage, vehicle registration, house and other insurance – is available at JK Insurance on the corner of Veteran Drive and Bowles Street.
Registering with Doctor, Dentist, Optician, etc – you can register with a professional of your choice.
